Our Christian School

“Building on a tradition of achievement and values in a caring environment.”

Our Christian Vision

At Kirkby Church of England Primary School, our Christian vision is at the heart of everything we do.

“Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.”
Philippians 2:4

This Bible verse reflects our belief that every member of our school community has a responsibility to care for, support and value others.

We are committed to providing a caring, inclusive and safe environment where every child is known, valued and encouraged to flourish. Through high-quality teaching, meaningful experiences and strong relationships, we aim to support every child to reach their full academic, personal, social and spiritual potential.

We want our children to leave Kirkby CE as confident, resilient and compassionate individuals who understand the importance of helping others and making a positive contribution to their community.

Our Christian Values

Our five core Christian values are:

Respect • Love • Caring • Friendship • Forgiveness

These values are represented by our school mascot, “CofE the Caterpillar”, who was designed by our School Council following consultation with pupils.

Our values are woven throughout school life and provide a shared language for children and adults. They guide the way we learn, behave and treat one another and help children develop kindness, empathy, responsibility and respect.

Children are encouraged to recognise these values in their own actions and in the actions of others.

Our Ethos in Action

Our Christian ethos can be seen in the positive, purposeful atmosphere throughout school and in the respectful relationships between children and adults.

We place great importance on ensuring children feel listened to and valued. Adults take time to hear children’s ideas and opinions, and pupils are encouraged to contribute to school life through opportunities such as School Council, pupil surveys and pupil voice discussions.

Our curriculum and wider school experiences also provide opportunities for children to develop confidence, independence, resilience and a strong sense of responsibility towards others.

Spiritual Development

We recognise the importance of supporting children’s spiritual development alongside their academic learning.

Through collective worship, Religious Education, reflection and opportunities across the wider curriculum, children are encouraged to ask questions, consider their own beliefs and values and develop an understanding of the beliefs of others.

We provide opportunities for children to experience awe and wonder, reflect on the world around them and think about how they can care for others and for God’s creation.

Our Church Community

We are proud of our strong links with the Kirkby Team Ministry – St Chad’s, St Martin’s and St Andrew’s Churches.

Members of the church community regularly lead collective worship both in school and at St Chad’s Church, as well as supporting children’s learning and spiritual development throughout the year.

These partnerships help children understand that they are part of a wider Christian community and provide meaningful opportunities to explore faith, prayer and worship.

Everyone Belongs

At Kirkby CE, we believe that everyone should feel welcomed, valued and included.

We celebrate the individuality of every child and work hard to ensure that all pupils, including those who may need additional support, are able to participate fully in school life and achieve their potential.

Through our Christian vision and values, we aim to create a community where children feel safe to be themselves, where differences are respected and where everyone is encouraged to flourish.

Together, through Respect, Love, Caring, Friendship and Forgiveness, we strive to create a school where everyone can grow, achieve and flourish.

Collective Worship

At Kirkby CE we believe that collective worship should be a celebration of our Christian values.  Collective worship sessions talk about God  and create space for children to think, engage and respond.  We therefore follow the Big Start Assembly Worship plan which spreads out the values over the whole year. This calendar also takes into account particular festivals and dates in the year, including things like Easter, Halloween, Christmas and Harvest, but also special days like anti-bullying day or Mothering Sunday.

Aswell as using the engaging and interactive stories provided by Big Start Assembly we are fortunate to have strong links with the Kirkby Team Ministry.  All our classes attend Eucharist services at St Chad's Church.  We are also fortunate to have weekly JAM (Jesus and Me) after school church sessions and Muddy Church activities, provided by Caroline (Under 18 Co-ordinator) and Rev. Philippa.
